ABSTRACT

Bone marrow aspirates revealed iron deficiency in 174 [23.1%] out of 753 inpatients for the period 1991-1994 as compared to iron deficiency in 82 [14.6] out of 562 inpatients diagnosed in the pre blockade period [1986-1989]. This statistically significant increase in proportion [P < 0.001] of patients affected after the blockade could be explained on the basis of nutritional deficiency or poor health status as a result of the blockade imposed on Iraq. Females are more significantly affected by higher rates of iron deficiency in the post blockade period [29.8%] as compared to female patients with iron deficiency examined in the pre blockade period [18.0%] [P < 0.001]
